Citation & Sourcing

The Modern Language Association was founded in 1883, and it's citation guidelines are widespread throughout the humanities.

​

The American Psychiatric Association was founded in 1892 but remained very, very small until after WW2. It's citation guidelines are widespread throughout the social sciences and many hard sciences.

​

APA is primarily different in requiring the year upon the first mention of a source and placing the year second to the name in the end text citation. This aids in determining if the research is recent. An issue that is not of such importance in the humanities, which deal with more timeless and universal concepts.

The Chicago Style  (chicagomanualofstyle.org) is the oldest style commonly used in America. It was first published in 1906 and is used in history and some social sciences. It is most recognizable by its use of footnotes (though it does have an alternative parenthetical style).
