NOTE ON BORGES: ​This page contains a comparison of two translations by AR and myself (MW) of two of Jorge Luis Borges' poems. The poems “Espejos” & "Un Sajon" were published in Selected Poems (edited by Alexander Coleman, Penguin Books, 1999). The two translations by AR and myself (MW) are provided to show the range in translation and demonstrate that translation is rarely a 1:1 map. The first does not maintain the rhyme scheme. The second is hopefully seen as an improvement without the intention of belittling the efforts by AR, who translates in far more languages than I can. Additionally, the time put into maintaining the rhyming scheme involved a great deal more effort than not doing so, and I wish to state that it should be understood that all translators have to undergo a cost/benefit analysis in undertaking any translation.
