Some instructors insist that one style of notetaking is superior to others; however, different personality types will gravitate to some styles over others and will likely find them more effective. However, my experience has shown me that many students have never received instruction on any style. For them, I recommend starting off with the Cornell method and personalizing their style afterwards.
